California County HR & Jobs Directory: Where to Apply for REHS and Environmental Health Positions
Verified links to the official jobs page for every county in California, plus what to know about NEOGOV, Merit System Services, and where Environmental Health openings actually live.
Once you're eligible for an EHS Trainee position — see our step-by-step certification guide if you're not there yet — the next hurdle is just finding where each county actually posts its openings. County government sites are inconsistent: some route through a shared statewide job platform, some run their own applicant system, and a few small counties still post PDFs on a department page.
We pulled together the official jobs page for all 58 California counties so you don't have to hunt for each one individually. Where a county uses a third-party job board that scrapes county postings (Indeed, Glassdoor, and similar), we skipped it in favor of the county's actual applicant-facing page.
How to use this directory
- Most counties (46 of 58) route applications through NEOGOV, at
governmentjobs.com/careers/[county]. Create one NEOGOV profile and you can reuse it across every NEOGOV county instead of re-entering your information each time. - Once you're on a county's portal, filter by Environmental Health or Public Health department to see current openings, which won't always include an EHS Trainee posting — those recruitments are periodic, not continuously open.
- Set up a Job Interest Card (NEOGOV's notification feature) for Environmental Health classifications in the counties you're targeting, so you hear about a trainee opening the day it posts rather than after it closes.
- Press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F on Mac) and type your county name to jump straight to its row in the table below.
California's Merit System Services (MSS) recruits Social Services and Child Support staff on behalf of 22 counties, at governmentjobs.com/careers/mss. Environmental Health and Public Health positions are not part of that arrangement — even in an MSS county, EH/PH openings are posted on the county's own portal, not through MSS. If you're job-hunting for an EHS Trainee role, go straight to the county link below.

A few things worth knowing before you apply
Watch for city/county name collisions
Several NEOGOV slugs are easy to get wrong because a city and its county share a name. Use the county slug — sanbernardino, not citysanbernardino; sbcounty for Santa Barbara County, not santabarbara (the city); santaclara for the county, not cityofsantaclaraca; and yubacounty, not yubacity. Nevada County's slug carries an unusual my prefix: mynevadacounty.
Not every county uses NEOGOV
Alameda (JobAps), San Francisco (SmartRecruiters), San Joaquin (in-house), and Placer (own portal) run independent applicant systems despite being sizeable counties. A handful of smaller, mostly rural counties — Alpine, Glenn, Modoc, Sierra, Trinity, Plumas, and Lassen — don't have a centralized online application system at all and may still use downloadable PDF applications. These are the entries flagged above; confirm directly with the county before you plan around them, and don't expect frequent EH postings from the smallest ones.
Frequently asked questions
What if my county isn't hiring right now?
That's normal. EHS Trainee openings are posted periodically, not year-round, so a county with no listing today isn't necessarily done hiring for the year. Set up a NEOGOV Job Interest Card for Environmental Health classifications in the counties you're targeting and you'll get an email the day a matching position opens.
Can I apply to multiple counties at once?
Yes, and there's no reason not to. Since most counties run on the same NEOGOV platform, one profile carries over across all of them instead of requiring a fresh application each time.
Do I need my CDPH certification letter before I apply for a trainee position?
It depends on the county. Some list the certification letter as a hard requirement to apply; others hire trainees and let them pursue certification alongside the job. Check the specific posting's requirements instead of assuming either way applies everywhere.
What if a link on this list is broken or a county has changed systems?
County websites move around more than you'd expect, and a handful of the smaller counties flagged above don't have a stable NEOGOV presence to begin with. If a link here is dead, search "[county name] county California human resources jobs" directly, or email corrections@passREHS.com and we'll fix it.
The bottom line
Finding an EHS Trainee opening is largely a matter of persistence — watching multiple county portals at once, since postings are sporadic and don't all open at the same time. Bookmark the counties you're targeting, set up interest-card notifications where the portal supports it, and revisit this list periodically since county web systems do change. Once you land a trainee position, our After You Pass article covers what comes after you clear the exam and register with CDPH.
